Excess Wear

GMAC EXCESS WEAR TABLE The GMAC Excess Wear Table describes common normal and excess wear items and highlights the differences. It provides the guidelines used to inspect your vehicle.

GMAC WEAR SQUARE The GMAC Wear Square is an easy to use tool developed to help you determine whether your vehicle has excess wear. The Wear Square can be used to measure tire tread, dings, scratches, and chips.

HOW TO USE THE WEAR SQUARE To spot excess wear on body surfaces, center the 2” circle in the GMAC Wear Square over the scratch, chip or dent. If the scratch, chip or dent is bigger than the circle in the Wear Square, it is excess wear.

To spot excess wear on the windshield or other glass areas, center the 1/2” circle in the GMAC Wear Square over the chip or “star break”. If the chip or “star break” is bigger than the circle in the Wear Square, it is excess wear.

To spot excess wear on interior surfaces, center the 1/2” circle in the GMAC Wear Square over the cut or tear, or the 1/8” circle over the burn hole. If the cut or tear is bigger than the 1/2” circle, or the burn is bigger han the 1/8” circle in the Wear Square, it is excess wear.

To measure tire tread, insert the marked orange edge of the Wear Card into each tread. If the 1/8” orange mark is visible in any of the treads, the tire has excess wear.

EXCESS WEAR

An excess wear charge results when the wear or damage to the vehicle is beyond normal vehicle wear. Any excess wear charge is determined at the time the vehicle is returned.

To help prevent excess wear, always maintain your vehicle in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. See your owner's manual for more details. For added convenience, SmartCare, an affordable maintenance plan, is available from your dealer.

Your leased vehicle insurance policy may pay to repair damage that would be considered excess wear. If your vehicle is in an accident, you should file an insurance claim.

Excess Wear includes such items as:

  • Exterior

    Individual occurrences of body, bumper or molding damage larger than 2” in diameter that cannot be repaired for $100 or less or any puncture.

    Visible sand/grinding marks, rough texture, excessive overspray, bad color match larger than 2” in diameter.

    Hail damage that reduces remarketability or impairs vehicle appearance.

    All damage or poor repair of damage that affects the vehicle’s structural integrity.

  • Interior

    Burn holes greater than 1/8” in diameter.

    Cuts, tears and singed areas greater than 1/2” in diameter.

    Stains that cannot be removed and that require replacement of upholstery or carpeting.

  • Tires

    Tread depth of less than 1/8” at the shallowest point.

    Studded tires.

    Gouges, cuts, sidewall plugs or tires in a condition that affects passenger safety.

  • Wheels

    Broken, cracked, bent or mismatched wheels or wheel covers.

  • Glass and Lenses

    Damage greater than 1/2” in diameter or any hole.

    Cracks greater than 2” in length or any hole.

  • Mechanical / Electrical and Maintenance

    Non-operational or malfunctioning equipment.

    Failures of vehicle systems that result from not adhering to manufacturer’s maintenance requirements.

  • Missing and Broken Parts

    Any missing equipment (includes keyless entry remote) or broken parts.

    Any replacement part that does not meet manufacturer’s specifications of equal quality and design. Replacement sheet metal must be new original equipment manufacturer parts if you have lease agreement #9.

  • Alterations

    Any modification, including but not limited to suspension modifications, changing vehicle color or factory paint schemes, lettering or graphics, holes in frame, post-delivery customizing, engine adaptations, fuel system adaptations, tinted or engraved glass.

    Note: All replacement parts must meet manufacturer’s specifications of equal quality and design. Replacement sheet metal must be new original equipment manufacturer parts if you have lease agreement #9.
